Abstract:A computational scheme is presented for the calculation of the optimal design of trusses. Constraints on the design variables (the cross-sectional areas) are considered. Linearly elastic behavior is assumed, and optimality criteria are derived, based on strain energy considerations. As in mathematical programming techniques, the optimum is approached through a sequence of designs, each differing slightly from its predecessor. The design changes to be made at each stage of the procedure are determined by application of the optimablity criteria. The formulation is sufficiently general to permit the solution of the problem of predicting both optimal member size and member layout-given the loads and the location of the joints. The procedure is illustrated with a number of numerical examples.
