Abstract:The first objective of this work is to use the differential equations of equilibrium of cylindrical shells in conjunction with the principle of minimum complementary energy for the derivation of constitutive equations for coupled stretching, bending and twisting of straight thin-walled open- and closed-cross section beams. The second objective is to use appropriate solutions of the cylindrical-shell differential equations, again in conjunction with the principle of minimum complementary energy, for the sake of deriving values for flexibility and stiffness coefficients of end-loaded, thin-walled cantilever beams, with applications to the problem of shear center and twist center location, including an analysis of the effect of shear lag on the location of these centers.
