Abstract:The method of Jones vector and matrix has been widely used for calculating light-intensity distribution of the reconstructed virtual image in holophotoelasticity. Although this method is straight-forward it is tedious to calculate fully by use of matrix method, In this paper, according to the relationship among various kinds of representation of polarized light, a general expression in terms of Stokes vectors for calculating light-intensity distribution in holophotoelasticity is derived. By use of this expression the calculation of light-intensity distribution in either conventional or the so-called polarization holophotoelasticity can be simplified by changing matrix calculus into scalar product of two Stokes vectors. Moreover, this expression can be applied to single-exposure as well as double-exposure holophotoelasticity. Finally some typical examples are given.
