Strong field effect on intracavity atoms in dye lasers: Self frequency-locking

By using a variety of dye laser types and intracavity atoms, the general nature of the narrowing of the dye emission to sharp lines near atomic transition is shown. The rôle of cavity adjustment is stressed. It is suggested that this “self frequency-locking” originates from strong field effects on intracavity atomic vapors.
