The Dependence of Raman Vibrational Frequencies for Cubic Type Ln 2O 3 on the Lanthanide Contraction
Abstract:Abstract Raman spectra for the sesquioxides of the rare earths Gd 2O 3, Dy 2O 3, Ho 2O 3,Y 2O 3,Er 2O 3,Tm 2O 3,Yb 2O 3,Lu 2O 3, which have the cubic type (bixbyite) structure, have been measured. The spectra for these type C compounds give a well defined characteristic band in the region between 358 to 392 cm -1 , 468 to 500 cm -1 and 565 to 610 cm -1 . The frequencies are directly related to metal oxygen distances. The strongest band in the Raman spectrum shift almost linearly to lower frequencies with increasing metal ionic radii, clearly shows the effect of the lanthanide contraction. The mass of the metal atom slightly affect the frequency position. The abnormal Raman spectrum of Yb 2O 3 have been discussed.
