Block‐Transitive and Point‐Primitive 2‐ Designs with Sporadic Socle

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to classify all pairs urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0002, where urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0003 is a nontrivial 2‐urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0004 design, and urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0005 acts transitively on the set of blocks of urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0006 and primitively on the set of points of urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0007 with sporadic socle. We prove that there exists only one such pair urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0008: urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0009 is the unique 2‐(176,8,2) design and urn:x-wiley:10638539:media:jcd21528:jcd21528-math-0010, the Higman–Sims simple group.
