Institution: | Tony Steward has taught mathematics from GCSE to postgraduate level since the 1960s and in that time computers have been used increasingly to teach and assess. Sunderland University nowsupports a range of software specifically designed for mathematics or statistics. Of all these tools one of the most accessible to students and with least overheads in learning time is the general-purpose spreadsheet. In the last five years he has used first As-Easy-As and then Excel to teach linear algebra in both theory and its practice in models. Students accept it easily and appreciate the added value of improving their spreadsheet skills while doing mathematics |
