Abstract:A practical and convenient synthesis of the fungicidal natural compound farinomalein is described starting from readily available ethyl 3-methyl-2-oxobutyrate and triethyl phosphonoacetate, employing a Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons condensation as the key step.
