Abstract:We have observed Mn2+ as a trace impurity in several crystals of Al2O3. The fourth order crystal field parameters determined from the splitting of the lines, due to the two inequivalent lattice sites in the corundum structure, are as follows: a= +12.4 ± 0.5GF= -113 ±1G role=presentation style=font-size: 90%; display: inline-block; position: relative;>a= +12.4 ± 0.5GF= -113 ±1G An analytical expression is derived which describes the dependence of the splitting of the line on crystal orientation.
