Abstract:In this paper, we examine the question of the stability of plasmas confined by magnetic fields. Whereas previous studies of this problem have started from the magnetohydrodynamic equations, we pay closer attention to the motions of individual particles. Our results are similar to, but more general than, those which follow from the magnetohydrodynamic equations.
