Rearrangement of a pyranone to a benzothiazole |

| Abstract: | The conversion of 2-chloromethyl-5-methoxy-4H-pyran-4-one to 2-amino-5-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzothiazole hydrochloride under mild reaction conditions has been observed. The synthesis of the identical benzothiazole by an alternate unequivocal method is also reported. |
