On the spectroscopic manifestations of weakly bound complexes in rarefied gases

A considerable fraction of weakly bound complexes is shown to occupy states metastable with respect to spontaneous decay, even at normal temperature in an equilibrium gas of moderate density. Collisionless decay of molecules results in anomalous broadening of spectral lines of hydrogen-bonded or van der Waals complexes.
