Abstract:NH4)2PtBr6 undergoes a structural phase transition from a cubic to a tetragonal phase at Tc=58K. Raman spectra of (NH4)2PtBr6 have been recorded in the temperature range of 9.5K -295K.Line splittings of the internal modes of the NHtetrahedron and the PtBr-octahedron were observed at low temperatures. All line splittings have been interpreted by using the correlation method. Splittings of the internal modes which suddenly occur point towards a first order phase transformation. Two-fold splitting of the A1-mode of the NH-tetrahedron indicates that there are two different kinds of ammonium ions in the Brayals cell in the tetragonal phase. No librational soft mode has been observed, which indicates an order-disorder no mechanism of this structural phase transition.
