This article is an abridged translation of current reviews,in whichthe controversy on the problem of nonclassical carbonium ion is presented.The de-bate is centered upon whether the norbornyl ion is O-participated by C-C or C-Hbonding electrons as a nonclassical one or is localized as a classical one but steri-cally strained as suggested by Brown so that its formation in solvolysis is accele-rated.
