Abstract: | We discuss the energy levels at the surface of a one-dimensional semi-infinite crystal which Aerts calculated via the scattering matrix method. He found that the number of possible surface states in the first forbidden gap is two, one or zero. Taking the existence condition into account, we show that, in agreement with Tamm, a maximum of one surface state can occur in the first forbidden gap. |
