An empirical chemical potential of the atomic core for non-transition element

An empirical relation between the energy of an atomic ion and its charge is determined from the experimental ionization potentials for non-transition elements. The definition of chemical potential μ_c and effective charge Z_c of the atomic core is postulated. Both are shown to be closely related to the classical electronegativity.
