Abstract: | The behaviours of solid compatible, poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(vinyl acetate), and incompatible, poly(methyl methacrylate)-polystyrene, blends have been studied by ultrasonic velocity measurements. It has been found that, in the compatible blends, the ultrasonic velocity varies linearly with composition; it deviates from linearity in the incompatible blends. These results are in conformity with the results of sonic velocity measurements for various compatible and incompatible blends reported by Hourston and Hughes. The variation of ultrasonic velocity has been explained in terms of morphology of the blends, with further evidence from scanning electron microscopy. |
