Abstract:The use of orthophosphoric acid as a catalyst has enabled the potentiometric titration of vanadiumIV to be carried out with ceriumIV sulphate in 1.0–2.0N sulphuric acid medium at room temperature. Using the same catalyst a method has also been developed for the simultaneous differential potentiometric titration of ironII and vanadiumIV with ceriumIV sulphate in a sulphuric acid medium; this method is more satisfactory than the procedure described by Furman1 because the first potential break is quite marked and it is more convenient because it avoids the high temperature required for the second stage of the titration in the Furman procedure. ChromiumIII and ironIII do not interfere in these titrations.
