Multipole contributions to the effective dielectric constant of suspensions of spheres

Abstract:
We study multipole contributions to the effective dielectric constant of dilute suspensions of uniform spheres. It is shown that for frequencies near the plasma resoance multipole contributions are negligible in comparison with the dipole contributions. Outside resoance multipolar corrections to the Clausius-Mossotti formula are of the same order of magnitude as the dipolar ones. We argue that in resonance the dipole approximation should be valid also for more complicated sphere models.
