Abstract:A hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer HAWP-18 has been synthesized by copoly- merization of acrylamide(AM), sodium acrylate(NaAA) and octadecyl dimethylallyl ammonium chloride(MJ-18). The effects of copolymer concentration , salt concentration, temperature and surfactant concentration on the viscosity of the copolymer have been studied. The results show that the solution viscosity increases sharply when the mass fraction of the copolymer is higher than critical associating concentration(c *); the viscosity of the dilute solution of the polymer decreases swiftly when NaCl is added, but that of the semidilute one increases; on adding of CaCl 2, the apparent viscosity increases at first and then decreases. The viscosity of copolymer solution has a maximum value as function of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) added.
