Abstract: | A method is described for the isolation of ppM levels of cadmium from natural waters, and their spectrophotometric determination. The water sample (1 litre) is made 1·2M in HCl or 1·0M in HBr, filtered, and passed through a column of Dowex 1-X8 (chloride form) anion-exchanger. The cadmium is quantitatively sorbed and simultaneously separated from other trace metals in the sample. Co-adsorbed zinc is removed with 0·15M HBr, and the cadmium eluted with 2M HNO3 and determined by the dithizone method. Many Austrian water samples have been analysed and found to contain 0·1–4·0 ppM of cadmium. |
