Oscillatory thermocapillary instability of a liquid layer in the presence of a surfactant

Abstract:The effect of capillarity and a surfactant on the stability of a liquid layer in the presence of a vertical temperature gradient is investigated. It is found that the surfactant leads to the appearance of both monotonic and oscillatory instability, the presence of a surface concentration destabilizing the equilibrium in the case of heating from below. When the free surface is heated, the surfactant stabilizes the capillary instability.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No.1, pp. 6–10, January–February, 1993.
