Abstract: | The short-range orders of liquid InxSn100−x binary alloys have been investigated along the liquidus based on the experimental results obtained using X-ray diffraction. The covalent bonding structures characterized by the shoulder on the high-Q side of the first peak of S(Q) for all the InxSn100−x melts are detected. With increasing Sn content, there is a rather continuous change of the local structure possibly related to the presence of nearly covalent bonds in the liquid alloy. The peculiar temperature dependence of the viscosity is assigned to the evolution of tetrahedral units. The observed correlation between liquid structures and peculiar viscosity behaviors provides new insight into nucleation phenomena from microscopic viewpoint. |
