Abstract: | The reactions of the oxides UO3 and U3O8 with excess alkali halides MX, particularly KCl, RbCl and CsCl, have been studied using techniques of i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The final product of these reactions is always the diuranate M2U2O7, but several intermediate phases have been detected and identified. These phases have the compositions MxUO3Clx (x ∼ 0·8) and M4U5O16Cl2. Some of the properties of these compounds are described, and the mechanism of the reaction is discussed. |
