Quantum mechanical calculations support Mulliken's conclusion that the short-wavelength portion of McLennan's diffuse band spectrum represents the highly structured continuum of the I2 D 1Σu+ → X 1Σg+ transition. Certain properties of this system make it interesting as a possible basis for a tunable UV laser and as a relative intensity standard for the 1800–4500 Å region. |
