Abstract:The effects of both the relativistic-electron-mass variation and the convective nonlinearity on the excitation of electron plasma oscillations in cold inhomogeneous plasmas are analyzed. The electron plasma oscillations are excited by the linear mode conversion of intense electromagnetic waves, or by the beating of two electromagnetic waves. A nonlinear driven plasma wave equation is derived by using the electron hydrodynamic equations in Eulerian variables as well as Maxwell' s equations. The plasma wave frequency detuning, caused by both the relativistic and convective nonlinearities, is shown explicitly. The evolution of the driven field is obtained numerically to show the interplay between the two nonlinearities for various density scale lengths, pump field strengths and collisional damping rates.
