| Abstract: | The effect of ions on the structure of water is discussed in terms of results for ionic hydration as derived from neutron diffraction isotopic substitution experiments. Results are presented for alkali ions (Li+, Na+ and K+), alkaline earth ions (Mg2+, Ca2+ and Sr2+) and for the anions Cl?, ClO?4) and NO?3, from which it is inferred that the water structure is disrupted more by cations with higher charge density. |
