Benzofurans. Ketene intermediates in the perkin reaction |

| Abstract: | The intermediacy of ketenes in the intramolecular reaction of ketoacids with sodium acetate in acetic anhydride to form benzofurans is demonstrated. The Perkin reaction conditions are superior to the classical ketene generation method of triethylamine dehydrochlorination of the acid chloride. |
