Abstract:The ABCD law and the M2 factor are generalized for the propagation of polychromatic pulsed light bcams through first-order optical systems. Two new perameters, the characteristic width ωc and the average wavelength λ of a polychromatic pulsed light beam, are introduccd. The parameters ωc and the generalized M2 factor are proved to be appropriate to describe the propagation capebility and the "times of the diffractionlimit" of a general polychrumatic pulsed light beam, respectively.
