A number of symmetrical and unsymmetrical azo compounds have been studied by electron impact mass spectrometry. In all cases (except azoisobutyronitrile) the compounds follow a two-step fragmentation mechanism \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \left{{\rm R}^{\rm 1} - {\rm N = N - R}^{\rm 2} } \right]_{}^{_.^ + } $\end{document} → R¹? N₂]⁺ (+R²˙)→R¹]⁺(+N₂).
