Abstract: | At 148–298 K, the rate constant for the reaction of methane molecules excited into bending vibration with atomic chlorine does not exceed by more than 30 times the corresponding constant for methane in thermal equilibrium. Consequently, at low temperatures and thermal equilibrium the reaction of methane with atomic chlorine proceeds through the vibrational ground state of methane.
