Abstract:Measurements of annihilation lineshape parameter S show that the hcp ? fcc phase change in cobalt creates a non-equilibrium defect population capable of trapping positrons. These defects can be removed by annealing above 870 K. This effect explains the discontinuous behaviour of S(T) at 690 K, which had been attributed to a lattice-structure dependence of free positron annihilation.
