Longitudinal relaxation time of aligned atoms

Abstract:
A detailed analysis is given of the expressions for the longitudinal relaxation time of a system of optically aligned atoms in a cylindrical or spherical cell. It is shown that the results obtained from this analysis may be valuable not only for relaxation processes in the radio frequency range (Zeeman or hyperfine structure) but also in optical spectroscopy (pair of levels connected by a magnetic dipole transition).
