Abstract:In this paper, we consider an initial‐value problem for Burgers' equation with variable coefficients urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0001 where x and t represent dimensionless distance and time, respectively, and urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0002, urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0003 are given functions of t. In particular, we consider the case when the initial data have algebraic decay as urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0004, with urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0005 as urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0006 and urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0007 as urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0008. The constant states urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0009 and urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0010 are problem parameters. Two specific initial‐value problems are considered. In initial‐value problem 1 we consider the case when urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0011 and urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0012, while in initial‐value problem 2 we consider the case when urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0013 and urn:x-wiley:00222526:media:sapm12098:sapm12098-math-0014. The method of matched asymptotic coordinate expansions is used to obtain the large‐t asymptotic structure of the solution to both initial‐value problems over all parameter values.
