Irradiation of α-quartz crystals with ultraviolet light (4.0–5.0 eV) results in ionization of alkali-compensated aluminum tetroxide impurity centres, as observed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of the hole centres created or of the germanium tetroxide electron centres formed when Ge is present. |
