Optical microwave generation using two parallel DFB lasers integrated with Y-branch waveguide coupler

Abstract:
A new device of two parallel distributed feedback (DFB) lasersintegrated monolithically with Y-branch waveguide coupler wasfabricated by means of quantum well intermixing. Optical microwavesignal was generated in the Y-branch waveguide coupler throughfrequency beating of the two laser modes coming from two DFB laserin parallel, which had a small difference in frequency. Continuousrapid tuning of optical microwave signal from 13 to 42GHz wererealized by adjusting independently the driving currents injectedinto the two DFB lasers.
