Abstract: | The reaction of dialkyl H-phosphonates with pyridine-3-carbaldehyde gives alkyl (3-pyridyl)hydroxymethylphosphonates. In liquid systems, the hydrogen atom is localized at the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group; in crystals, the existence of a zwitter-ionic form could not be excluded.
