Abstract —The products of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene sensitized photooxidation of α- and β-pinene were separated and identified. The mechanism of this reaction was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, solvent dependence and determination of oxidation potentials of olefins. The formation of an exciplex between excited dicyanoanthracene and pinenes was observed in non-polar solvents. On the bases of these observations, an electron transfer mechanism is proposed for the initial step of this reaction. |
