Abstract: | The discontinuous change of state across a transverse shock wave in an incompressible elastic solid subjected to finite deformation is examined. The discontinuous jump in the Cauchy and Finger strain, the plane of polarization of the induced velocity field, the stress-strain relation across a transverse shock, the entropy produced by the shock, the Hugoniot of the material, etc. are computed. The general theory is applied to a discussion of transverse shock waves in an ideal incompressible rubber. |
