Abstract: | Graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate on viscose fibers induced by the DMA–Cu2+ ion system was investigated under different conditions. Variables studied include concentration of DMA, Cu2+ ion, and MMA, reaction time, and temperature. There are optimal concentrations of DMA and Cu2+; below or above these concentrations lower grafting occured. Within 4 hr reaction time, the grafting reaction showed an initial fast rate followed by a slower one at 80°C. At 70°C, on the other hand, the graft yield increased in proportion to the increase in reaction time. Increasing the monomer concentration did not have a significant effect on the graft yield during the first 45 min of reaction. Beyond this, the effect of monomer concentration was marked. |
