Abstract:Itis observed that the infinite energy associated with Volterra dislocations can be avoided if it is assumed that every dislocation is accompanied by an incipient crack. The application of a modified form of the Griffith energy criterion then leads to estimates of the fracture strength of a material containing dislocations.
