Abstract: | The absorption spectra of Cr(III) and Cu(II) in molten sulphate are analysed by ligand field theory. It is suggested that Cr3+ is in octahedral coordination with Δ = 14·3 kK and β 0·72, indicating some degree of π-bonding, while Cu2+ is in highly tetragonal coordination, which is unusual for only one type of bonding ligand. |
