By using the band part of the Hubbard Hamiltonian as our starting point, we find that for one electron/atom, with Coulomb repulsion U and bandwidth Δ, there is a single band with sharp Fermi surface and enhanced Pauli paramagnetism for U < Δ, and a splitting into two symmetric bands with local moment formation for U > Δ. |
