Biological applications of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy: a study of phase transitions in biomembranes

The thermal response of aqueous lipid membranes has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Changes in infrared spectral parameters are applied to the analysis of the strutural changes which occur within the lipid bilayer as the temperature is varied. Such studies provide the basis for the interpretation of phase transitions in complex biomembranes.
