After a presentation of Max Born's most salient biographical data, we discuss his contributions to science and science policy, with special emphasis on those related to condensed matter physics. Our discussion includes journal articles as well as books. The methodology used is both qualitative and quantitative, including number of items, number of formal and informal citations, and other bibliometric indicators such as the recently proposed Hirsch index (h‐index). The data are mainly based on the Thomson/ISI Web of Science (WoS) which covers a carefully selected set of the more prestigious journals dating back to 1900. Born's books and articles not published in the journals covered by the WoS can also be evaluated, provided they are cited within the WoS journals. Some anecdotic and historical details, which have come to the fore in the course of our bibliometric investigations, are included. 相似文献

The prospects for future applications of cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose esters (CE) were assessed via an analysis of literature data. An examination of more than 50,000 citations in the published literature with relevance to CA and CE has shown that, while the R&D effort continues without discernible slow-down, the emphasis has shifted in favor of D at the expense of R in recent years; more publications now originate in Southeast Asian countries; and most current journal articles deal with specialty products, such as membranes, controlled release agents, and biopolymers. The prospects for future applications are viewed as being related to the ability to add new performance features to CA, particularly thermal processability, water-dispersibility, and the ability to interact with other polymers on the molecular level. This can be achieved by such secondary modifications as the introduction of plasticizing (mixed) ester substituents, carboxyl groups, and the use of (monofunctional) oligomers in block copolymers, respectively. In addition, the adoption of acetylation technology to lower grade pulps and even wood and wood fibers may result in new business opportunities in thermoplastic and soluble wood esters, or in acetylated solid wood products with superior dimensional, biological and light-stability characteristics. 相似文献

A generally weak area in research papers, reports, and reviews is the complete identification of seminal background documents that formed the building blocks for these papers. A method for systematically determining these seminal references is presented. Citation-assisted background (CAB) is based on the assumption that seminal documents tend to be highly cited. Application of CAB to the field of nanotechnology research is presented. Over the past several decades, the Nobel Prize program has slowly but steadily been modified in both transparent and opaque ways. A transparent change has been the creation of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, officially known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. An opaque change has been the mutation of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry into what is effectively the “Nobel Prize in Chemistry or Life Sciences.” This paper presents a detailed study of this opaque change, including evidence that the disciplines of chemistry and biochemistry cover, today, intellectually quite distinct and generally scientifically‐unrelated intellectual territory. This paper supports the evolution of the Nobel Prizes, and encourages the Nobel Prize program to move from opaque to transparent change processes for the next generations of achievement in the sciences. 相似文献

The Hirsch index or h‐index is widely used to quantify the impact of an individual's scientific research output, determining the highest number h of a scientist's papers that received at least h citations. Several variants of the index have been proposed in order to give more or less preference to highly cited papers. I analyse the citation records of 26 physicists discussing various suggestions, in particular A, e, f, g, h(2), hw, hT, ?, m, π, R, s, t, w, and maxprod. The total number of all and of all cited publications as well as the highest and the average number of citations are also compared. Advantages and disadvantages of these indices and indicators are discussed. Correlation coefficients are determined quantifying which indices and indicators yield similar and which yield more deviating rankings of the 26 datasets. For 6 datasets the determination of the indices and indicators is visualized. 相似文献
