This article explores the use of geometric algebra in linear and multilinear algebra, and in affine, projective and conformal geometries. Our principal objective is to show how the rich algebraic tools of geometric algebra are fully compatible with and augment the more traditional tools of matrix algebra. The novel concept of an h-twistor makes possible a simple new proof of the striking relationship between conformal transformations in a pseudo-Euclidean space to isometries in a pseudo-Euclidean space of two higher dimensions. The utility of the h-twistor concept, which is a generalization of the idea of a Penrose twistor to a pseudo-Euclidean space of arbitrary signature, is amply demonstrated in a new treatment of the Schwarzian derivative.  相似文献

This article concerns an old conjecture due to E. T. Whittaker, aiming to describe the group uniformizing an arbitrary hyperelliptic Riemann surface as an index two subgroup of the monodromy group of an explicit second order linear differential equation with singularities at the values .

Whittaker and collaborators in the thirties, and R. Rankin some twenty years later, were able to prove the conjecture for several families of hyperelliptic surfaces, characterized by the fact that they admit a large group of symmetries. However, general results of the analytic theory of moduli of Riemann surfaces, developed later, imply that Whittaker's conjecture cannot be true in its full generality.

Recently, numerical computations have shown that Whittaker's prediction is incorrect for random surfaces, and in fact it has been conjectured that it only holds for the known cases of surfaces with a large group of automorphisms.

The main goal of this paper is to prove that having many automorphisms is not a necessary condition for a surface to satisfy Whittaker's conjecture.

We study the properties of meromorphic solutions of the Schwarzian differential equations in the complex plane by using some techniques from the study of the class Wp. We find some upper bounds of the order of meromorphic solutions for some types of the Schwarzian differential equations. We also show that there are no wandering domains nor Baker domains for meromorphic solutions of certain Schwarzian differential equations.  相似文献

Similar to the investigations of unstable polygonal minimal surfaces by Courant [1] we introduce here a variational principle for the free boundary problem with prescribed topological type which produces minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds with constant curvature. For special boundary configurations the surfaces have no branch points. The approach can be applied to numerical algorithms since it is constructive.  相似文献

A new combination of Lie symmetry and Singular Manifold methods has been employed to study (3 + 1)-dimensional generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP). Infinite-dimensional space of Lie vectors has been established. Single and dual linear combinations of Lie vectors are used after appropriate calculations of the arbitrary functions to reduce the equation to an ordinary differential equation (ODE). The resulting ODE is then analytically solved through the singular manifold method which resulted in a Bäcklund truncated series with seminal analysis leading to a Schwarzian differential equation in the Eigenfunction φ (η). Solving this differential equation leads to new analytical solutions.  相似文献

A fundamental set of functions f0, fi and f automorphic with respect to G will be constructed from the conformal mapping of the fundamental domain of G.
