Characterizing sequences for precompact group topologies

Motivated from [31], call a precompact group topology τ on an abelian group G ss-precompact (abbreviated from single sequence precompact  ) if there is a sequence u=(_un)$\mathbf{u}=(u_n)$ in G such that τ is the finest precompact group topology on G   making u=(_un)$\mathbf{u}=(u_n)$ converge to zero. It is proved that a metrizable precompact abelian group (G,τ)$(G,\tau )$ is ss-precompact iff it is countable. For every metrizable precompact group topology τ on a countably infinite abelian group G there exists a group topology η such that η is strictly finer than τ   and the groups (G,τ)$(G,\tau )$ and (G,η)$(G,\eta )$ have the same Pontryagin dual groups (in other words, (G,τ)$(G,\tau )$ is not a Mackey group in the class of maximally almost periodic groups).     

Pseudocompact groups: progress and problems

Several months ago the speaker and Jan van Mill gave a proof of this result [W.W. Comfort, J. van Mill, Extremal pseudocompact abelian groups are compact metrizable, Abstracts Amer. Math. Soc. 27 (2006) 78 (Abstract #1014-22-958); W.W. Comfort, J. van Mill, Extremal pseudocompact abelian groups are compact metrizable, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 135 (2007) 4039-4044]: A pseudocompact abelian group of uncountable weight admits both a proper dense pseudocompact subgroup and a strictly larger pseudocompact group topology.This presentation will describe both the necessary new details of the argument and the historical development (useful tools, special cases). Among those who contributed essentially are: K.A. Ross (1964, 1966); T. Soundararajan (1982); L.C. Robertson (1982, 1988); J. van Mill (1989); J. van Mill and H. Gladdines (1994); J. Galindo (2002).Several related unsolved problems will be cited.     

Compactness theorems for abstract evolution problems

This paper deals with precompactness of trajectories of solutions of general nonlinear evolution problems in Banach spaces in the compact resolvent case. We carry out new criterions which extend or supplement for instance fundamental results of Pazy, Dafermos-Slemrod or Webb. These criterions have staightforward applications to Dynamical Systems and Control Theory.

Uniqueness of Solutions on the Whole Time Axis to the Navier-Stokes Equations in Unbounded Domains

We consider the uniqueness of bounded continuous L^{3, ∞}-solutions on the whole time axis to the Navier-Stokes equations in 3-dimensional unbounded domains. Here, L^{p, q} denotes the scale of Lorentz spaces. Thus far, uniqueness of such solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in unbounded domain, roughly speaking, is known only for a small solution in BC(?; L^{3, ∞}) within the class of solutions which have sufficiently small L^∞(L^{3, ∞})-norm. In this paper, we discuss another type of uniqueness theorem for solutions in BC(?; L^{3, ∞}) using a smallness condition for one solution and a precompact range condition for the other one. The proof is based on the method of dual equations.
