For compact irreducible sufficiently large 3-manifolds containing 2-sided projective planes, we consider the following Realization Problem: Given a finite subgroup of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, is there a finite group of homeomorphisms, which induces this subgroup? On deformations of Hamiltonian actions

In this paper we generalize to coisotropic actions of compact Lie groups a theorem of Guillemin on deformations of Hamiltonian structures on compact symplectic manifolds. We show how one can reconstruct from the moment polytope the symplectic form on the manifold. Received: 21 March 2006     

Traces on the skein algebra of the torus

For a surface F, the Kauffman bracket skein module of F×[0,1], denoted K(F), admits a natural multiplication which makes it an algebra. When specialized at a complex number t, nonzero and not a root of unity, we have Kt(F), a vector space over C. In this paper, we will use the product-to-sum formula of Frohman and Gelca to show that the vector space Kt(T²) has five distinct traces. One trace, the Yang-Mills measure, is obtained by picking off the coefficient of the empty skein. The other four traces on Kt(T²) correspond to the four singular points of the moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections on the torus.     

Some 3-manifolds with 2-generated fundamental group

We describe a family of graph manifolds that have 2-generated fundamental group but do not admit a Heegaard splitting of genus 2. They are closely related to the examples provided by Boileau and Zieschang if these are considered as (non-proper) graph manifolds.Received: 14 August 2002     

Approximating the single source unsplittable min-cost flow problem

In the single source unsplittable min-cost flow problem, commodities must be routed simultaneously from a common source vertex to certain destination vertices in a given graph with edge capacities and costs; the demand of each commodity must be routed along a single path so that the total flow through any edge is at most its capacity. Moreover, the total cost must not exceed a given budget. This problem has been introduced by Kleinberg [7] and generalizes several NP-complete problems from various areas in combinatorial optimization such as packing, partitioning, scheduling, load balancing, and virtual-circuit routing. Kolliopoulos and Stein [9] and Dinitz, Garg, and Goemans [4] developed algorithms improving the first approximation results of Kleinberg for the problem of minimizing the violation of edge capacities and for other variants. However, known techniques do not seem to be capable of providing solutions without also violating the cost constraint. We give the first approximation results with hard cost constraints. Moreover, all our results dominate the best known bicriteria approximations. Finally, we provide results on the hardness of approximation for several variants of the problem. Characterization of supercommuting matrices

For a given n-by-n matrix A, we consider the set of matrices which commute with A and all of whose principal submatrices commute with the corresponding principal submatrices of A. The properties of this set are examined, with particular attention to its dimension.     

Partially finite convex programming,Part I: Quasi relative interiors and duality theory

We study convex programs that involve the minimization of a convex function over a convex subset of a topological vector space, subject to a finite number of linear inequalities. We develop the notion of the quasi relative interior of a convex set, an extension of the relative interior in finite dimensions. We use this idea in a constraint qualification for a fundamental Fenchel duality result, and then deduce duality results for these problems despite the almost invariable failure of the standard Slater condition. Part II of this work studies applications to more concrete models, whose dual problems are often finite-dimensional and computationally tractable.     

Separable free quadratic algebras over quadratic integers

The aim of the paper is to determine all free separable quadratic algebras over the rings of integers of quadratic fields in terms of the properties of the fundamental unit in the real case. The paper corrects some earlier published results on the subject.
