In this note, we show that given a closed, orientable genus-g surface S
g
, any hyperbolic toral automorphism has a positive power which induces a quadratic, orientable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on S
g
. To show this, we lift Anosov toral automorphisms through a ramified topological covering and present the lifted homeomorphism via a standard set of Lickorish twists. This construction provides a general method of producing pseudo-Anosov maps of closed surfaces with predetermined orientable foliations and quadratic dilatation. Since these lifted automorphisms have orientable foliations, this construction is a sort of converse to that of Franks and Rykken [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999], who established that one can associate to a quadratic pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism with oriented unstable foliation a hyperbolic toral automorphism. 相似文献

We study the cone-manifolds whose singular sets are obtained by orbifold and spontaneous surgeries on components of the Borromean rings. We establish existence of geometric structures on these manifolds. For manifolds with hyperbolic structure we obtain an integral representation for volumes. 相似文献

Given a finitely presented group , finitely generated subgroup of , and a monomorphism , we obtain an upper bound of the Dehn function of the corresponding HNN-extension in terms of the Dehn function of and the distortion of in . Using such a bound, we construct first examples of non-polycyclic solvable groups with polynomial Dehn functions. The constructed groups are metabelian and contain the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups. In particular, this answers a question posed by Birget, Ol'shanskii, Rips, and Sapir.

If a simple 3-manifold M admits a reducible and a toroidal Dehn filling, the distance between the filling slopes is known to be bounded by three. In this paper, we classify all manifolds which admit a reducible Dehn filling and a toroidal Dehn filling with distance 3. 相似文献

For a given polyhedron K(?)M,the notation RM(K)denotes a regular neigh- borhood of K in M.The authors study the following problem:find all pairs(m,k) such that if K is a compact k-polyhedron and M a PL m-manifold,then R_M(f(K))≌R_M(g(K))for each two homotopic PL embeddings f,g:K→M.It is proved that R_S~(k 2)(S~k)(?)S~k×D~2 for each k(?)2 and some PL sphere S~k(?)S~(k 2)(even for any PL sphere S~k(?)S~(K 2)having an isolated non-locally flat point with the singularity S~(k-1)(?) S~(k 1)such thatπ_1(S~(k 1)-S~(k-1))(?)Z). 相似文献

Normal surface theory is used to study Dehn fillings of a knot-manifold. We use that any triangulation of a knot-manifold may be modified to a triangulation having just one vertex in the boundary. In this situation, it is shown that there is a finite computable set of slopes on the boundary of the knot-manifold, which come from boundary slopes of normal or almost normal surfaces. This is combined with existence theorems for normal and almost normal surfaces to construct algorithms to determine precisely those manifolds obtained by Dehn filling of a given knot-manifold that: (1) are reducible, (2) contain two-sided incompressible surfaces, (3) are Haken, (4) fiber over S1, (5) are the 3-sphere, and (6) are a lens space. Each of these algorithms is a finite computation. Moreover, in the case of essential surfaces, we show that the topology of each filled manifold is strongly reflected in the combinatorial properties of a triangulation of the knot-manifold with just one vertex in the boundary. If a filled manifold contains an essential surface then the knot-manifold contains an essential normal vertex solution which caps off to an essential surface of the same type in the filled manifold. (Normal vertex solutions are the premier class of normal surface and are computable.) 相似文献

We introduce a new invariant of bipartite chord diagrams and use it to construct the first examples of groups with Dehn function
n2log n. Some of these groups have undecidable conjugacy problem. Our groups are multiple HNN extensions of free groups. We show
that n2log n is the smallest Dehn function of a multiple HNN extension of a free group with undecidable conjugacy problem.

The solar radio spectra of the gyro-synchrotron radiation without absorption from mildly relativistic non-thermal electron
have been presented using the model with the spherical symmetric nonhomogeneity. These spectra have the following features:
(i) Twists and turns of the spectra, which appear at the joint between the medium and high frequencies, (ii) Flux density
drop at the lower frequencies. Even if there are no absorption in the radio sources, flux density drop at the lower frequencies
is still present because of magnetic nonhomogeneity. (iii) These theoretical spectra belong to C type. This provides us a
new interpretation for the observed solar burst C type spectra.

Pride groups are defined by means of finite (simplicial) graphs, and examples include Artin groups, Coxeter groups, and generalized tetrahedron groups. Under suitable conditions, we calculate an upper bound of the first order Dehn function for a finitely presented Pride group. We thus obtain sufficient conditions for when finitely presented Pride groups have solvable word problems. As a corollary to our main result, we show that the first order Dehn function of a generalized tetrahedron group, containing finite generalized triangle groups, is at most cubic. 相似文献
