Reduction of Phenyl-Substituted Pyridinium Methoiodides with Sodium Borohydride. Formation of Amine-Borane Complexes in Water

Reduction of phenyl-substituted pyridinium methoiodides with sodium borohydride in water afforded besides the desired tetrahydropyridines substantial amounts of amine-borane complexes. Reduction in methanol afforded tetrahydropyridines in high yield, with almost no amine-boranes formed.     

Optical manipulation of particle ensembles in air

We demonstrate that airborne light-absorbing particles can be photophoretically trapped and moved inside an optical lattice formed by multiple-beam interference. This technique allows simultaneous three-dimensional manipulation of multiple micro-objects in gases.     

Dispersion relation in the limit of high frequency for a hyperbolic system with multiple eigenvalues

The results of a previous paper (Muracchini et al., 1992) are generalized by considering a hyperbolic system in one space dimension with multiple eigenvalues. The dispersion relation for linear plane waves in the high-frequency limit is analyzed and the recurrence formulas for the phase velocity and the attenuation factor are derived in terms of the coefficients of a formal series expansion in powers of the reciprocal of frequency. In the case of multiple eigenvalues, it is also verified that linear stability implies λ$\lambda$-stability for the waves of weak discontinuity. Moreover, for the linearized system, the relationship between entropy and stability is studied. When the nonzero eigenvalue is simple, the results of the paper mentioned above are recovered. In order to illustrate the procedure, an example of the linear hyperbolic system is presented in which, depending on the values of parameters, the multiplicity of nonzero eigenvalues is either one or two. This example describes the dynamics of a mixture of two interacting phonon gases.     

Mixed symbolic–numerical computations with general DAEs II: An applications case study

A variety of theorems and properties of nonlinear DAEs were discussed in part I. This paper illustrates many of these ideas within the context of analyzing a specific nonlinear system that exhibits a variety of interesting features. An efficient algorithm for a job shop problem

We study the problem of minimizing makespan in a two-machine job shop with unit processing time operations. An efficient algorithm with respect to a succinct encoding of the problem instances is proposed. The algorithm is an improvement of earlier algorithms proposed for the problem by Brucker [1,2], Hefetz and Adiri [7], and Timkovskiy [15]. Synthesis and 1H NMR characterization of substituted 1-amino-9-imino-4-nitro-9,10-dihydr oacridines as potential antitumor agents

A convenient method for the synthesis of unsubstituted and substituted 1-amino-9-imino-4-nitro-9,10-dihydroacridines, 9 and 10 , respectively, is reported. Their ¹H nmr data are reported and discussed in order to confirm the imino tautomeric structure.     

RESOLUTION OF TWO EMISSION SPECTRA FOR TRYPTOPHAN USING FREQUENCY-DOMAIN PHASE-MODULATION SPECTRA

We describe a novel application of frequency-domain fluorometry which allows resolution of the decay times and emission spectra of samples which display multi-exponential decay kinetics. This method does not require any previous knowledge about the decay times or any assumptions about the shape of the emission spectra. We record the wavelength-dependent phase angles and modulations (phase angle and modulation spectra) using a number of light modulation frequencies. The data is analyzed by non-linear least-squares to recover the emission spectra and their associated decay times. Phase and modulation spectra (PM Spec) were used to recover the emission spectra associated with the two decay times of tryptophan at pH = 7 (0.54 and 3.44 ns). The emission spectra of these components are centered at 340 and 355 nm, respectively, with the amplitude of the 0.54 ns component contributing 6% to the total emission. These results are in agreement with previous time-resolved studies by Szabo and Rayner [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 102, 554-563 (1980)]. Control experiments were performed on mixtures of N-acetyl-L-tryptophanamide (NATA) and PPD, which demonstrate our ability to recover the spectra and decay times from two component mixtures. NATA itself displayed a single decay time and only one emission spectrum.
